This term we have been studying 'The Ice Palace' by Robert Swindells. The book tells the story of a young, boy's pursuit to find his captured brother from the evil, child abductor Starjik. Pupils started off by studying how the author created a setting description using various devices such as ambitious vocabulary, similes and metaphors.
Pupils soon went on to write their own setting descriptions with the aim of using their words to create powerful setting descriptions. The following week, pupils had the opportunity to explore 'Starkjik.' Pupils took part in an exciting hot seat activity which was preceded by a discussion on how Starjik was portrayed in the story and what Starjik's actions revealed about him. To end, having created a word bank which was filled with lots of descriptive language pupils wrote a character description for their long write.
