Our curriculum extends beyond the National Curriculum and includes a wide range of enriching experiences and opportunities which develop academic understanding of curriculum strands and extend the range of children’s experiences. A primary focus of our curriculum is to raise aspirations, engender a sense of personal pride in achievement, and provide a purpose and relevance for learning.
The school takes pride in providing a highly inclusive environment, where learners demonstrate high levels of enjoyment in their education and make good progress across the curriculum. Children at all levels are helped to achieve their potential. Those who are most able are challenged and supported through being offered tasks which provide opportunities for greater depth and those who can struggle in particular aspects are encouraged and given targeted support to embed skills, to develop at their own pace or simply to learn in a style that best suits their individual needs. We believe that a consistent, high quality enrichment map supplements learning to provide life-long experiences to make concrete links to in-school learning.
Whole School Theme Days/Weeks
Throughout the year, themed days/weeks are woven into the curriculum to extend the breadth and balance of opportunities we offer our pupils. These include, Anti-bullying Week and Safety Day, Creative Arts Weeks, World Book Day, Black History Day, Sport & Health Week, Science Events, School community fairs, National Poetry Days and others over the academic year.
Educational Visits and Residentials
School trips and visits are an integral part of the education of children at Shoreditch Park Primary. We value the opportunities such visits offer our pupils and ensure that our children are able to experience the range of experiences that London offers. Trips include class visits aimed at bringing learning alive and providing first-hand experience for our children – making connections with learning through their time at primary school. Extra-curricular outings such as activities with the school choir, sporting events and attending or taking part in performances or competitions supplement that experiences that children can partake within the school day.
Visitors into School
Visitors have a valuable role to play and can contribute to many aspects of the life and work of the school. They deliver talks, workshops and full day activities across a wide range of subjects, giving pupils access to outside experiences and expertise.
PE & Sport
At Shoreditch Park Primary children in Key Stage 1 and Lower Key Stage 2 use the excellent facilities at Britannia Leisure Centre with our qualified Badu Sports Coach for their PE lessons. Badu coachs also run sporting activities at lunchtimes; and promotes increased pupil participation in PE & Sport beyond the school day.
Our Year 3 children also use Britannia Leisure Centre weekly for the whole year to access swimming lessons.
Music, Art & Drama
At Shoreditch Park, we provide opportunities for children to take part in a wide range of musical activities and performances where they are encouraged to sing, compose and work creatively with sound. Through active listening, pupils’ awareness, understanding and appreciation of a wide variety of music are developed. A range of opportunities are provided within and beyond the curriculum for children to showcase their musical skills and talents, for example in class assemblies and end of term performances. Year 2 will have the opportunity to visit the ballet at a world class theatre before performing their own Christmas play in school for parents.
Assemblies
A rounded programme of weekly assemblies helps to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, and provide a sense of community across the school. At the end of each half term an Assembly is held to celebrate the achievements of our pupils and promote a sense of pride in academic achievement.
Homework
Homework can make an important contribution to a child’s progress at school. As well as reinforcing learning in the classroom, homework helps children to develop the skills and attitudes they will need for successful independent lifelong learning.
Homework is set with tasks planned to appropriately challenge all pupils. Weekly activities focus on spelling and numeracy to reinforce and consolidate skills taught and is shared through Google Classrooms – for which every child has an individualised account.
